Go green save gas & cash!

Part of saving gas (the main part) is awareness! The ScanGauge II gives you the power to monitor driving habits and their effects immediately! There are various areas in the ScanGaugeII that will assist you in becoming a more aware and economical driver by providing helpful readouts of some of the following.

  • Instant Fuel Economy – Displayed in MPG.
  • Fuel Rate – Displayed as gallons per hour consumed.
  • Digital Speedometer & Tach – Allows precise speed correction.
  • Average MPG – Shows current trip, total for day, previous day and as of last fillup.
  • Total Fuel Used – Shows current trip, total for day, previous day and as of last fillup.

Now Added! – Cost Per Mile

You can now enter how much was paid per gallon/liter of fuel and have the ScanGauge calculate the cost as you drive. This will come up as a Cost Per Mile gauge, also in your trip functions you can view the cost of the current, yesterday’s and the total tank fuel cost. With the new Add-A-Gauge™ function you are able to view current trip cost as part of the 4 simultaneous gauges.

Save gas using the Deceleration Fuel Cut (DFC) built into many newer cars!

This is a quick look at what DFC is and how it works. While traveling down the road at a cruising speed if your foot is removed from the gas pedal DFC kicks in and cuts the fuel flow to your injectors to preserve gas. Using this operation you can save gas by modulating the throttle pedal to activate DFC while still driving the same speed! A safe real world example of how DFC would be used is while going down a long descending hill on the freeway you lift your foot from the gas pedal, using the momentum of the vehicle to maintain speed, DFC activates and cuts fuel to the injectors maximizing miles per gallon while still allowing instant access to the gas in case of an emergency. Different cars might handle DFC triggers in another manner but on Toyota here is when it comes into play. Traveling at a RPM above 1200 if you lift your foot you will see the DFC activate however when RPM’s drop below 1100 or the clutch or gas is pressed fuel will be restored.  To verify this operation on your car while using the ScanGaugeII lift your foot from the gas pedal and you should see the MPG go to 9999 and the LP will change from Closed to Open.

(A word of caution: NEVER shift the vehicle into neutral while driving! As I have seen this suggested in various places online I would like to caution you, not only does this defeat DFC and the Decel Fuel Cut operation, if you need to perform an emergency action such as pressing on the throttle in a hurry your car will be in neutral providing a potentially dangerous situation.)
